Walk for survival

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

Even a walk can make a difference to those in need, and Bairnsdale’s Matt Furphy is living proof.
Mr Furphy, a cancer survivor, has raised more than $53,000 for the Children’s Cancer Foundation after finishing a 13-day walk from Bairnsdale to the Royal Children’s Hospital on Friday 2 August.
Mr Furphy walked 300 kilometres and managed to stop by Hotondo Homes in Hallam last week for a fundraising barbecue.
“The support we have received from everyone has been unreal,” Mr Furphy said.
“We started out with the vision to promote cancer awareness and preventative measures and our efforts have received more support than I ever could’ve imagined.”
Since being diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and it going into remission three years later, Mr Furphy has dedicated his time to fundraising through setting up the Furphy and Friends working committee with the Rotary Club of Bairnsdale Sunrise.
“I couldn’t have done this or raised as much as I have without the support of everyone,” Mr Furphy said.
“My walking group in particular have been outstanding and such a fun bunch to be with.”
Throughout the 13-day walk, Matt has also visited Traralgon, Warragul, Pakenham and Moorabbin in his efforts to raise money for cancer research.
