AFTER a former member of the Narre Warren Police Unit was saved by an organ donor, police officers at the station developed a new stance on the issue.
On Tuesday afternoon, Bridget O’Bree from Southern Health spoke to the group about organ donations and the importance of discussing your wishes with your family.
“People don’t realise that we need to talk to our families about what we want to happen,” she said.
Ms O’Bree said her presentations also aim to increase awareness about the possibility of donating your organs and the number of benefits associated with this.
Senior Sergeant at Narre Warren Police Station Gerry Hengel said the presentation was prompted by a former member who received a life-saving heart as a result of an organ donor, three years ago.
Sen Sgt Hengel said that this former policeman now has a new lease on life, is employed again and leading a normal life.
A number of Narre Warren police registered to become an organ donor last Tuesday.
Ms O’Bree said it is pleasing to see an increase in awareness about this possibility, but stressed how important it was that loved ones know about your wishes.
“I think it (awareness is increasing), which is really positive,” she said.
“Make your wish count and tell your family.”
