STUDENT leadership at Gleneagles Secondary College has never been stronger after the school held an inaugural market day earlier this month.
The day was organised by the school’s year nine Student Leadership class, with the help of the Parents and Friends Association, and consisted of a range of stalls, activities and food on sale for the guests to get their teeth stuck into.
Student Leadership class teacher Lynne Moller said there was roughly 2500 people who came to the market throughout the day.
“The concept was to bring the community together and that really did work.
“We had a lot of people turning up,” she said.
“The Parents and Friends Association (PFA) ran the barbecue and all the PFA people got involved and it was fantastic.”
Ms Moller praised the involvement of PFA member Jamel Kaur in particular for her co-ordination of the market day and being a guiding influence for the students.
“She was the leading light on the PFA, she was the one who came in and decided she wanted to have a market day and so she whipped up all the enthusiasm among the parents,” Ms Moller said.
“She’s already in business; she sells sweet and sour liquorice.
“She already knew a lot about running markets, she came in and she spoke to my class.
“They all got involved and then they followed her lead a lot of the time.
“The kids had a ball; they really stepped up to being leaders.”
The market was held at the Gleneagles carpark, in Endeavour Hills, with various items on offer including onesies, jewellery, painting and even airbrush tattoos.
Christmas trees were also on sale at the market, supplied by the Friends of Ermera community group as part of their Christmas delivery initiative.
“It went from 10am to 3pm and there was a steady stream of people all day,” Ms Moller said.
“For our first attempt at a market, it didn’t go too badly.”
President of the Friends of Ermera Jan Trezise, founding principal at Gleaneagles, was also officially recognised at the market day for her contribution to the school with its new gates being dedicated to her.
