Head to Cabaret

WINDMILL Theatre Company is set to tread the boards again in its upcoming production of ‘Cabaret’.
Director Peter Roberts said ‘Cabaret’ was a play with great songs rather than traditional musical.
“It takes us on a journey where you are welcomed into the world of the Kit Kat Klub,” he said.
Mr Roberts has a strong theatre background and said he loved the show because it was a dramatic piece that could speak to people about their own condition and choices in life.
“It is about responding to challenges.
“Fraulein Schneider, for example, is a character where you are left wondering ‘What would I do in her situation?’
“Patrons will have lots of laughs but will also eventually be deeply moved by the story,” he said.
Mr Roberts said he was impressed at how much depth the principal actors had portrayed in their characters and was looking forward to a great show.
Leah Anderson, who received the Judges’ Award from the Theatre Guild for her role as Pitti Sing in Windmill’s ‘Hot Mikado’ last year is one of the ‘Cabaret’ musical directors.
With a background in school choirs and musicals Ms Anderson said she was finding it more nerveracking being a musical director than being on stage.
She added that she was full of admiration for the production team due to their overall pursuit of excellence for a great show.
“It’s great working with adults — very challenging, but lots of fun,” Ms Anderson said.
‘Cabaret’ is based on the 1972 Academy Award winning movie of the same name.
The story line sees Cliff Bradshaw arrive in Berlin in 1930 and drawn into the decadent, escapist world of the Kit Kat Klub. There he meets and falls in love with Sally Bowles.
However, the world outside is changing and dark forces are looming that will shatter his illusion and change Germany forever.
