Recognition for school volunteers

THE hard working volunteers on Casey’s school councils will be acknowledged with a civic event.
Councillor Janet Halsall moved a motion at last week’s council meeting calling for the function to be held in May or June this year.
She said previous civic receptions had been held and proved very successful in praising the work done by many Casey residents within the school community.
The new Balla Balla Centre in Cranbourne has been tipped as a possible venue for the function.
“It’s a great way to acknowledge our school council members and at the same time promote the new Balla Balla centre,” Cr Halsall said.
She said a relevant State Government minister could also be invited.
Cr Kevin Bradford was keen to have the function also include preschool committee of management volunteers.
However, concerns were raised over the number of people attending and whether or not the venue was large enough.
This resulted in the motion covering only primary and secondary school councils.
Councillor Paul Richardson also voiced his concerns about the function.
“We have civic dinner after civic dinner. When is it going to stop?” Cr Richardson said.
Cr Halsall said it was important the reception was tailored just for primary and secondary schools so it didn’t lose its relevance.
The motion was passed.
