Cycle shed grants now available

MORE Casey students may be encouraged to ride their bike to school after the State Government announced this week grants for school bike sheds.
Schools are being urged to apply for $5000 of funding to help schools design and build a bike shed, or convert an existing shed into a secure bike storage facility.
Both primary and secondary schools can apply for the money with only 40 grants on offer throughout Victoria.
The Go for Your Life bike shed grants program has been designed to help schools create an environment where students are encouraged to ride to school.
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley is keen for Casey schools to apply for the funding.
“Only about 20 per cent of school-age children currently use active modes of transport such as walking or riding to get to class, compared to 80 per cent in the 1970s,” Ms Graley said.
She said the government was committed to increasing opportunities for Victorians to get healthy and active.
“$2.9 million has been committed over four years to encourage students to ride bikes, scooters, walk or skate to class.
“This is yet another component of the Bracks Government’s successful Go for your Life program, which encourages all Victorians to increase physical activity and eat healthy food,” Ms Graley said.
Applications for the funding close on Friday, 25 May.
