Self-defence for women

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

WOMEN in Casey will again have the opportunity to learn self-defence for free this year with the first class of 2013 announced for later this month.
The class, run by martial arts expert Tricia Clarke and sponsored by Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan, offers women an opportunity to learn physical self-defence techniques while just as importantly receiving advice about keeping safe.
Ms Clarke said it was important for women to know how to defend themselves, especially with continued police reports of violence against the person.
“A lot of women are recognising now that there is a bit more violence in society,” she said.
“They don’t necessarily want to go to a (martial arts) dojo, but they want to equip themselves as best they can.”
Ms Clarke said people’s perception of violence had been heightened in the wake of tragedies such as the death of Jill Meagher, increasing the need for classes which teach both self-defence and self-awareness.
“The whole class is based on being aware and not afraid. I’m not frightening those who attend and I’m not making them hyper-sensitive,” she said.
“If you’re aware, you won’t get into trouble, but if you do i’ll show you how to protect yourself.”
The upcoming defence class is for women only and invitees are encouraged to bring their sister, daughter, mother or friend.
Mr Donnellan said everyone should be able to feel safe in their neighbourhood and home.
“Ms Clarke has been running these practical self-defence forums for women for years,” he said.
“I’m really happy to again sponsor the event and make sure it’s free for local residents.”
The first free self-defence class for 2014 will be held on Wednesday 30 April between 7pm and 9pm at Fleetwood Primary School in Fleetwood Drive, Narre Warren.
