Business is blooming

A KEYSBOROUGH business is set to bring joy to mums around Australia this Mother’s Day.
Staff at wholesale commercial nursery Karinga on Keys Road have been tending 150,000 pots of chrysanthamums, which will be trucked to Coles and Woolworths stores around the country in the lead-up to Mother’s Day.
Owner Roy Schirmer said traditional colours such as pink and white chrysanthamums were still the most popular choice of flower for Aussie mums, though other colours, such as red and purple, and varigated blooms in yellow and orange were also sought-after in May.
Chrysanthemums are naturally in season in autumn, so are plentiful in time for Mother’s Day.
Potted chrysanthemums can last for weeks indoors if watered when dry and kept in a well-lit spot.
A family business, Karninga Nursery has been growing flowers in Keysborough for 40 years.
It produces more than 1 million pots a year.
Mother’s Day is one of the nursery’s busiest times of the year with flowers destined for stores across Victoria as well as NSW, South Australia and Queensland.
