RESIDENTS of a popular aged-care home in Doveton were thrilled when the property received a make-over this month.
Bunnings Dandenong was more than happy to help staff at the Chestnut Gardens Aged Care Home improve their outside area.
With a new water feature, better access points and unique gardens, more residents at Chestnut have been able to grow lovely vegetables in recent months.
Chestnut Gardens Lifestyle Co-ordinator Ashwin Lennox said the therapeutic qualities of gardens are increasingly being recognised as a way to improve the health of aged care residents.
“Residents derive real calm and serenity from having access to an open and safe environment,” she said.
“We are part of nature, even if you feel isolated from fellow human minds, you can still feel a connection with trees and flowers.”
With plans already underway to build a three seater swing and also a hose reel on the cards, Ms Lennox said the residents had never been happier with Chestnut’s outside area.
“Resident Josephine Hiscox, 84, used to pride herself on her garden,” she said.
“Staff have found Josie keen to help with watering plants and weeding, and having conversations about the plants they grow every day.
“This engagement is so important for the residents.”
