Inter-league clash goes down to the wire

By BRIDGET SCOTT

IT was a nail-biting end to a highly contested match at Geelong’s Simonds Stadium on Saturday, when the Casey Cardinia inter-league side snuck out a two-goal win over Bellarine.
The side made up of top players from clubs across the league fired out to a great start, but their opponents weren’t going to let them get away with it that easily. Despite an eight-goal lead during the second quarter, positional changes from both sides at half time caused a turn up in the third term and Casey-Cardinia was down by two at three-quarter time.
Coach Kerry Twyford said these changes didn’t achieve quite what they had in mind.
“They made some changes at half time and so did we,” she said.
“Theirs worked and ours didn’t work quite as well.”
The last quarter was nerve-racking for all involved and it was goal for goal for the first part.
Twyford said a few turnovers in the dying minutes of the game and a couple of crucial goals from Narre Warren’s Tayla Shannon really helped the side get over the line.
“It was a very close win,” Twyford said.
Pakenham’s Meaghan Atkins – first-time in the inter-league side – was awarded best-on-court on the day, while Beaconsfield’s Jasmine Maddocks and Berwick’s Sarah McDermott were others to shine through the midcourt. Narre Warren pair, Tracey Dell and Tayla Shannon also received sponsorship awards.
