Seniors savour cultural flavour

THE Narre Warren Senior Citizens are no strangers to multiculturalism.
And last week the group paid tribute to the varied cultural background of its members with a special Multicultural Day prior to their regular meeting.
The Narre Warren Seniors come from 22 different countries and they used last Wednesday as an opportunity to recognise this mixture of cultures.
“We dressed in something that would represent our 22 countries of birth,” secretary Bernadette Gonsalvez said.
“So there were colourful costumes – tartans, aussie hats, flags, a Driza-Bone coat, Irish and German hats, Indian saris, tea towels, aprons and bags from various countries.”
The seniors also shared in a variety of different cuisines, eating everything from mouth-watering noodles, to pies and pastries, to roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, to Vegemite sandwiches and even fairy bread.
“Sharing food really brings people together, and the conversation centred around recipes and origins of various dishes,” Mrs Gonsalvez said.
Chinese dancer Sindy capped off the afternoon, entertaining the group with a background story for each dance she performed.
