Thumbs up for green teams

EVERYONE was seeing green at James Cook Primary School earlier this month.
The Endeavour Hills school held its annual Green Day event on Tuesday 22 July where ‘sustainability’ was the buzz word.
The cold weather wasn’t enough to dampen the students’ spirit as they planted a variety of trees, shrubs, vegetables and herbs around the school on the day.
Teacher Filomena Garner said the Green Day was a rewarding and productive exercise for all the students involved and thanked Bunnings Dandenong for donating some of the plants.
“With watering cans, they watered each plant to give them the best chance to grow,” she said.
“During the year they will continue to maintain the gardens and harvest the fresh, organic produce when the vegetables are mature.
“This was an invaluable ‘real life’ experience for the students which aimed to get them outside and be actively involved as well as to educate them in the important role they play in caring for their environment.”
Throughout the year the school’s Green Team promotes and co-ordinates projects that involve energy saving features, waste management, biodiversity, water saving and gardening.
