‘Book Igloo’ cool for school

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

READING and science came together in an impressive amalgamation at Gleneagles Secondary College this month.
This term students began to build a ‘Book Igloo’ for their science class, working tirelessly on the project in the last couple of days to coincide with Book Week.
“We first discovered the original creation online and we thought of re-creating it to see if it was real or just photoshopped,” Library teacher Lynne Moller said.
“We made our first attempt on Tuesday the 12th of August. We were not necessarily trying to recreate the whole igloo, rather to test and try out techniques for the real shot.
“On Thursday 14 we started to make our official ‘Book Igloo’.”
Ms Moller said the students started off the project by sorting out all the books based on their size and width.
“Then, starting with the large, thin textbooks, our structure began to take its form,” she said.
“We then continued going up at a lean to form the shape, with the books becoming smaller gradually.
“Over time the structure was in full action, resembling the original design, but smaller.
“We were given a time limit of two periods to try and get as far as possible throughout the final creation.”
The Book Igloo will be on display at the school’s library soon.
