Defence is the key

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

WOMEN across Casey will again be given the opportunity to learn how to defend themselves this month.
The second free women’s self-defence class, run by martial arts expert Tricia Clarke and sponsored by Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan, is scheduled for Wednesday 10 September. The class offers women an opportunity to learn physical self-defence techniques while just as importantly offering advice about keeping safe.
Ms Clarke has previously said it was important for women to know how to defend themselves, especially with continued police reports of violence in society.
“A lot of women are recognising now that there is a bit more violence in society,” she said,
“They don’t necessarily want to go to a (martial arts) dojo but they want to equip themselves as best they can.”
Ms Clarke said people’s perception of violence had been heightened in the wake of tragedies such as the death of Jill Meagher, increasing the need for self-defence and self-awareness.
“The whole class is based on being aware and not afraid. I’m not frightening those who attend and I’m not making them hyper-sensitive,” she said.
“If you’re aware, you won’t get into trouble but if you do, I’ll show you how to protect yourself.”
The upcoming defence class is a free community event for women, and will be held at Marama Primary School on Wednesday 10 September from 7pm to 9pm.
“Learning self-defence techniques is invaluable,” Ms Clarke said.
“The class teaches both practical moves and offers advice for women of all ages to better defend themselves.”
