Safety hazard delays game

By Marc McGowan
THE Berwick Miners were unable to take to the field against the Southern Seahawks on Sunday due to unsafe playing conditions at Monash University in Clayton.
The teams were due to play on a different oval to which is usually used at Monash University, but after consultation with the referees decided to postpone the contest until the scheduled bye in two weeks’ time.
The fence of a tennis court running adjacent to the ground was deemed to be too close to one of the sidelines and represented a safety risk to both the players and referees.
The rivals did partake in a friendly scrimmage, however, to give the inexperienced Seahawks more match practice.
Miners coach Dale Warren’s focus will now turn to Sunday’s big clash with the Nunawading Warriors at Springfield Reserve, Croydon, 10.30am.
“We’ve been taking it to the top teams, so it will come down to the momentum of the game and the weather is supposed to be the same, so hopefully it’s not raining,” he said.
“We’re holding the current top teams to low scores up to half-time, so we need to take that next step, and offensive coach Mel Martin has been doing some good playcalling, so hopefully that will continue.”
