Lives stitched up

A STITCH in time may save a life if knitters from across Casey continue their good work.
Local residents have been busy knitting woollen outfits to keep underprivileged children in Mongolia warm during the winter months.
Guardian Pharmacy in Beaconsfield is running the Guardian Angel program and is offering free knitting books for interested knitters.
The patterns featured have been specifically chosen by Guardian Pharmacies and World Vision to assist needy families in Mongolia.
Pharmacist Chris Warne said the program was a great way to help disadvantaged children get through a chilly winter.
“We take mild weather for granted in Australia,” he said.
“But the cold affects the lives of poorer children immensely, leading to lack of education, lack of nutrition and sickness. “There’s no doubt the warm garments knitted by our local Casey Guardian Angels help to save lives.”
Droughts and floods are common in Mongolia with winter temperatures reaching as cold as minus 40 degrees centigrade.
More than 34 per cent of families are considered extremely poor. Mr Warne said the program was free to join. “However, we know that wool can be expensive. So perhaps people could get together with friends over the winter months and knit an outfit or blanket together.”
