College teams grab a bag of titles

BERWICK Secondary College had a successful second term on the basketball court with seven of its eight teams crowned district champions.
The intermediate boys and girls teams, made up of Year 9 and 10 students, were the first to do battle. The boys defeated all the teams in their draw quite convincingly and prevailed against the Eumemmerring Glen Eagles Campus team in a tough grand final match.
The Berwick Secondary intermediate girls team also had good results winning three from five matches and finishing overall equal second. The Pakenham Secondary team won all matches and came out on top in the final. Pakenham Secondary College sport co-ordinator Megan Groenewegen said it was great that the girls won as Berwick dominated the district on the day.
The Berwick Secondary senior teams were too strong in their competition. Both the girls and boys teams, comprised of Year 11 and 12 students, were undefeated and became district champions.
The girls came up against last year’s zone champions Lyndhurst Secondary College. However, with great teamwork and persistence the girls prevailed in a close contest.
The boys also had a tough match against last year’s champions in Cranbourne Secondary College. Berwick had control for the majority of the match but a late surge by Cranbourne turned the match into a nail-biter with Berwick eventually winning by five points.
The Berwick Year 7 girls and boys teams didn’t drop a match and both had first-place finishes on the day. Good teamwork got the boys over the line in a tough final against Cranbourne Secondary College. Berwick PE teacher Chris Pentland said it was great for the college to achieve such great results and a just reward for all the training they had done prior to the tournament.
The seven Berwick teams and Pakenham Secondary intermediate girls team will soon compete in the south-east zone championships.
