Vet drugs targeted

A HALLAM vet burglary last week has sparked fears that animal drugs could be used on humans.
Animal medicines were stolen from Dr John Stewart’s car while it was parked outside The Vet Centre on 9 August.
The veterinarian, who also operates a mobile clinic out of his car, said he believed his vehicle was targeted specifically for the drugs.
He said many drugs used in the animal world could have the same effect if used on humans.
Ketamine, an animal tranquilliser, is sometimes used as a recreational drug.
Dr Stewart said veterinary instruments were also stolen, including eight x-ray plates and several other tools.
“The equipment would be useless to anyone not involved with animals,” he said.
The items have a combined value of about $15,000.
Police said thieves broke into the Nissan Navara dual cab station wagon between 4.35pm and 8.30pm after breaking off a lock.
Dr Stewart said it was a brazen theft with the car park of the Princes Highway centre “lit up like a Christmas tree”.
“The car park is extensively lit up. I noticed the car had been broken into when I left at about 8.30pm,” he said.
“It’s a major inconvenience. They also stole several drawers from the back of the cab that I will now have to replace.
“When I get a callout I am now taking the items back into the clinic and not leaving them in the car,” he said.
Anyone with any information about the theft is asked to contact Narre Warren police on 9705 3114.
