IT was a case of masters and apprentices during the school chess zone finals at Endeavour Hills last week.
Eumemmerring College hosted the event and results would suggest the home team was well suited to the familiar environment.
Four of the five top ranked players were from Eumemmerring College while the top ranked team was also Eumemmerring.
Chess coordinator Kazi Mapuranga said the standard of play was high with a good atmosphere surrounding the tournament.
“It was really a tight event but the boys’ determination paid off and they managed to win by a credible four points just above Brighton Grammar,” Mr Mapuranga said.
He said the Eumemmerring students would now progress through to the state finals next month.
“The gold medallists, Alvin Sivarajah, Damien Van Den Hoff, Jeff Acquino and Naveed Azimi only lost one match each in a seven-round tournament,” he said.
Kambrya College also performed admirably by finishing in third spot.
Looks like check, mate
