STUDENTS from three local schools will soon have an extra reason to ride their bikes to and from home each day.
Eumemmerring Primary School, Narre Warren South P-12 College and Lynbrook Primary School will receive $5000 each to build new bike sheds.
The State Government grant is part of the Go for your life campaign, which encourages all Victorians to increase physical activity, eat healthy food and get involved in their local communities
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said the funding would continue to encourage more young people to stay healthy through sport and recreation.
“This is a great boost for our local students who want to ride their bikes to school,” Ms Graley said.
“We want to give our students the best start in life and help keep them on track. With this grant we are encouraging children to stay healthy and active.”
Sport and Recreation Minister James Merlino said the funding was an important part of the campaign to curb obesity rates in children and promote an active, healthy lifestyle.
“Research tells us that providing secure bike storage facilities will increase the number of students who ride to school,” Mr Merlino said.
“Obesity rates across the whole population are rising, and this is one way to increase physical activity and improve the health of our children and young people,” he said.
Another 40 schools across Victoria will receive a $5000 grant later this financial year, with a focus on schools in disadvantaged areas.
