A MAN is missing and feared dead after fire gutted a Narre Warren house on Tuesday morning.
Police are sifting through the ashes of the house in The Oaks after the blaze started about 4.40am.
A 32-year-old man was still unaccounted for yesterday (Wednesday) as police and Country Fire Authority (CFA) officers searched through what was left of the brick property.
A search and rescue dog was also at the house in a bid to help find any human remains.
The mother and father of the missing man escaped the blaze and were both taken to Casey Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Narre Warren Criminal Investigation Unit detectives, arson squad members and a CFA chemist are continuing their investigations into the cause of the fire.
Senior Sergeant Ian Wilcox said the unstable structure was making the search for the missing man difficult.
He said it was a painstaking task with any potential evidence in the rubble having to be carefully examined.
“The house is quite unsafe and there are structural problems throughout the whole house,” Sen Sgt Wilcox said.
He said the safety of everyone involved in the investigation was paramount and would not be jeopardised in a bid to speed up the process.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
