Canny Cam’s keen-eyed claim

BERWICK MONTUNA GOLF
AN outstanding week for golf saw Cam McDonald claim the Score of the Week title with an impressive 46 points on Thursday morning. Playing off 19, Cam had a day out breaking 80, playing to a handicap of 9 and winning the competition of the day.
Three players tied for second place this week – Greg Beckwith and Bill Hartley returned nett 63s on Saturday to claim the monthly medal, and Chris Bourke had 42 points on Thursday afternoon to claim the weekly Green Jacket. It was the second time the Green Jacket had been presented in the week following Dave Newsom’s victory with 41 points on Monday morning in the second “Masters Monday” event held at the club.
Dean Baker’s sensational round on Monday, after backing up from a win in pennant on Sunday, is definitely worth mentioning as he finished a close second to Dave with 40 points – a previous club champion, Dean plays off 2 so his 40 points equated to a 67 (2 under) off the stick.
Nick Steel continued his recent rich vein of form claiming the junior medal for April with a nett 65 on Saturday. All three grades were decided on countback last Saturday – Brendon Leane claimed A Grade defeating Wayne Westwick and Damien Goodwin on a countback.
After winning the C Grade club championship earlier this year, Grant Shelton celebrated his promotion to B Grade with a win on Saturday knocking Graeme Radley off on a countback with a nett 69.
In C Grade, Greg Beckwith knocked Bill Hartley off on a countback after they both returned nett 63s.
There were two doubles this week with Juls Balog winning the competition on Sunday with 38 points as well as claiming the NTP on the 4th hole, and Maggie Robinson won the ladies event on Wednesday which included the NTP on the 13th hole.
The closest NTP for the week went to Brian McPhie who finished 40cm from the 9th on Thursday with Greg “Wicksy” Wicks next closest leaving it 73cm from the 13th on Sunday.
