Free smoke alarms for seniors

CASEY’S senior citizens have the chance to pick up a free smoke alarm as part of Seniors Week.
Any resident over the age of 65 who arranges to undergo a free hearing check up at AudioClinic in Berwick will receive the smoke alarm.
Researches have discovered that people suffering hearing loss may have a greater risk of being injured during a house fire.
AudioClinic ambassador Doctor Kerryn Phelps said about one-third of Australians over 65 suffer some hearing loss.
“Typically high frequencies such as smoke alarms are not as easy to hear if you suffer hearing loss, especially if installed in a far off room,” Dr Phelps said.
“AudioClinic is offering free smoke alarms to encourage seniors within the City of Casey to install an extra one in their bedroom.”
The offer of a free Australian Standard smoke alarm is open to residents over 65 who arrange a hearing check up at AudioClinic Berwick during Seniors Week.
Hearing check ups are also free of charge for Seniors Week, which runs from 7 to 14 October.
“It is vital that seniors take extra precautions around the home to guard against injury during house fires.
“By installing an extra smoke alarm, you can help ensure you’re alerted in the case of a fire,” Dr Phelps said.
All residents are reminded to vacuum dust from smoke alarms and test the battery this month, when daylight saving begins.
