Man left in coma after club fight

By Callan Date
A BERWICK man is fighting for his life in hospital after a fight outside the popular Blitz nightclub last Sunday week.
The 22-year-old is in an induced coma after sustaining serious head injuries in a brawl at the nightclub’s car park.
The fight at the nightspot, which is located inside Castello’s Berwick Springs Hotel on Clyde Road, comes only two weeks after the News reported an incident in which two people were injured.
On that occasion the assault resulted in a 20-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man being taken to Casey Hospital to seek treatment for cuts to the face.
Narre Warren Detective Senior Sergeant Ian Wilcox has voiced his concern at the latest incident and the pattern of alcohol-fuelled violence at Blitz and other licensed venues in the City of Casey.
“I’m sure if the people who commit these offences could turn back time they would regret their decision,” Sen Sgt Wilcox said.
“They have to live with the consequences of what they have done for the rest of their lives.”
He said many of the people who commit serious alcohol-fuelled assaults were ‘cleanskins’ – first time offenders who have no previous criminal record.
“A likely outcome is that you will go to jail,” Sen Sgt Wilcox said, “you just have to look at the consequences of these attacks because your whole life can change in a split second.”
Blitz management did not return several calls made by the News.
A 24-year-old Cranbourne man has since been charged with intentionally causing serious injury in relation to the Sunday 14 October incident.
