Ada’s number comes up for birthday surprise

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

A WELL kept secret made this week’s bingo afternoon at the Hampton Park Seniors Club anything but average with a few surprises taking the cake.
Half time normally calls for a cup of tea and a biscuit – but this week’s bingo was interrupted with a big surprise for a local legend.
“You can ask anyone in Hampton Park about Ada Arvon and I bet they’d know her and be able to tell you about an organisation or charity she’s been involved with,” seniors club president Neil Shepard said.
The club decided to throw a surprise party for Ada, one of their oldest and most dedicated members, on Thursday 27 August and Mr Shepard said she sure was ‘surprised’.
“Having lost her son and husband we are more of a family to Ada and with all that she has done for Hampton Park she deserved a special 90th birthday,” he said.
Ms Arvon, who was the 12th resident to move into Hampton Park, has been a part of the club for 35 years and never misses a game of bingo.
“Only through illness would she miss bingo,” Mr Shepard laughed.
Celebrating alongside two other club members – Edna Strudwick who turned 86 years old and Glenys Brett-Brazill blowing out the candles on 76 – Mr Shepard said the three surprise cakes were very well received.
