Showing You the way

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

A GROUP of youths who have battled drug addiction are staying grounded by giving back to the Casey community.
Throughout this month the members of the Youth YOU Program, based in Hallam, have been running a drive for the homeless shelters in Casey, in which the group has been collecting a large amount of money, food and clothes for those less fortunate in the municipality.
Former drug dealer and addict Glenn Munso is the creator of the Youth YOU Program, an initiative which helps guide drug-addicted and disenchanted youths aged 13 to 24 by involving them in a weekly mentoring session, as well as gym classes three times a week.
Glenn said the drive for the homeless had given the Youth YOU members another perspective on life.
“It shows them that times can get tough for others as well,” he said.
“ … One of the biggest things is it to teach them to give back to the community, and they love helping others.
“It keeps them connected and grounded.”
In 2008, Glenn was arrested for dealing marijuana and assaulting a police officer. He received a one-month jail sentence and ultimately served an 18-month intensive corrections order.
It was a turning point that saw him give up drugs – taking and dealing.
Earlier this year Glenn said his focus for the holistic program has always been to gain trust, something he feels is unattainable unless people are able to relate to the kids.
“When they go and see someone, like a psychologist sitting in front of them, they feel judged,” he said.
“So they come here and there’s no judgement because, obviously, I’ve been in their shoes as well.”
The Youth YOU homeless drive will continue until the end of the month, and to contribute, or for more information, visit www.youthyouprogram.com.
