Crime surge

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

RIFE with crime, Casey’s surge in theft, home invasions and burglaries have only been confirmed in recent stats as the region battles with record high robberies.
Casey’s Inspector Paul Breen only recently spoke out at a local forum addressing the widespread issue, saying Casey’s crime rate was “through the roof”.
Endorsing what Insp Breen already knew, recorded crime statistics for Victoria for the year ending 30 June has found robberies in the City of Casey are up 39 per cent on the previous year.
The figures showed stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour is also on the rise.
Between July 2014 and June 2015 such offences increased a whopping 32 per cent.
Released on Thursday 1 September the crime stats showed sexual offences were a hot priority for Casey police, up 133 cases on the previous financial year.
With more and more brazen home break-ins the raw data exposed a 14 per cent increase in burglary and break and enters.
The previous year’s recorded offences for burglary and break and enters sat at 1645 – in the past year there were 1884 recorded.
In August this year Insp Breen was also concerned at the number of assaults in the region and the statistics have established an increase of three per cent.
The data showed a rise of 25 per cent in thefts, and the number of homicide and related crimes went from six offences to eight.
