EUMEMMERRING College student Brooke McGowan-Grills took a step back in time for a history project with a difference recently.
The Year 10 Gleneagles student impressed judges with her Port Arthur memorial entry as part of the National History Challenge.
Brooke’s piece won the state section of the Lessons from the Past through a museum display and has now progressed through to the national level to be judged in Perth.
The National History Challenge asked students to act as ‘historians’ and investigate their own community or explore major events that have taught Australia, as a nation, new ideas and theories.
As well as offering a variety of presentation styles, including an individual research essay, a three-dimensional museum display, a multimedia format or a performance, the challenge emphasises and rewards quality research.
Campus principal Sue Peddlesden said Brooke’s effort, as well as those from other students who reached the state level, was a credit to the school.
“We actively encourage and support our students to be involved in external competitions such as the National History Challenge as it provides an excellent avenue for our students to further enhance their learning and demonstrate their outstanding variety of skills,” Ms Peddlesden said.
“It is a great experience for all our students who participated and a fantastic achievement for those who reached the state level, and particularly for Brooke, who is representing Gleneagles at the national level of the competition.”
