CASEY councillor Wayne Smith was blown away by the depth, professionalism and research presented by the high school students in this year’s Monash University Casey Challenge.
Immersed into university life for two months, eight Casey schools had the chance to enter the challenge based around ’what makes a great city’.
After sitting in on numerous lectures and meeting faculty representatives at the Berwick campus, 19 teams entered the assignment-based challenge with the winners announced on Wednesday 14 October.
Sitting on the judging panel, Cr Smith said the initiative of the students was outstanding.
“They did their schools and the City of Casey proud and the six finalists Powerpoint presentations were IT savvy and well written and spoken,” Cr Smith said.
Organised by the City of Casey, 125 Year 9 students took on the university experience in a life after high school taste test.
Something Cr Smith would have jumped at had he got the opportunity when he was a student.
“The winning team from Waverley Christian College will present at a council meeting and have been invited to a sit down meal with Mayor Mick Morland and the Casey councillors to discuss further their ideas on what makes a great city,” Cr Smith said.
