Batting on after milestone

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

REACHING the ripe old age of 100 is achievement enough, but Berwick’s Iris Clark is showing no signs of slowing down even though she’s well past the century milestone.
On Monday, Iris celebrated her 102nd birthday with her twin daughters, Elaine and Jean, and the staff from Craigcare in Berwick, where she is a resident.
Iris was born in 1913 – the third of nine children.
She worked as a seamstress in the city where she met her husband to be, Ern, and they married in 1935.
Three years later they had identical twin daughters, Elaine and Jean.
Jean said her mum moved from Balwyn to Fiddlers Green retirement village in Berwick, and after 16 years then moved again to Craigcare.
“She loved living in Berwick and especially enjoyed walking down to Ritchies grocery shop and chatting to the lovely ladies who worked there,” Jean said.
“Iris is very healthy for her age and gets great care.
“She loves to talk about ‘old times’ and singing the old songs she still remembers.”
Iris has six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
