13 unlocked cars broken into

THIRTEEN unlocked cars parked around Berwick Primary School were broken into overnight on Sunday 13 December.
Detective Senior Sergeant Rodney Maroney, from the Narre Warren police station, said there was no sign of forced entry to all 13 cars.
“This was a fair spate and unlocked car door burglaries drive a huge percentage of our crime, and it’s purely about locking cars,” Det Sen Sgt Maroney said.
Bryn Mawr Boulevard in Berwick and surrounding streets were targeted in the spate and a variety of items was stolen.
“Cash, wallets, sunglasses, GPS and phone equipment was stolen,” Det Sen Sgt Maroney said.
“If everyone locked their cars, they’d have to smash windows and that causes sound, so then they might only attempt two or three cars instead of 13.”
Det Sen Sgt Maroney said car burglaries tend to spike during school holidays.
“Youths walk around at night bored trying doors,” he said,
He urged everyone to lock their cars and hide valuables.
