$5000 fine for tree felling

A MAN has been fined $5000 after illegally chopping down 53 trees at a Doveton property.
The man pleaded guilty in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court after failing to obtain a permit from council before lopping the trees.
The man did not record a conviction, but was ordered to pay council’s costs.
Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the recent incident sent a clear message to the community.
“This serves as a serious reminder to industry professionals, developers or anyone who is planning to remove trees or other vegetation to check with council to confirm any permit requirements that might apply, before undertaking work,” he said.
“With a growing population, trees provide a very important habitat, wildlife corridor and visual amenity aspect in Casey.
“Illegal vegetation removal will not be tolerated, and council will take enforcement action when there is a clear breach of the planning regulations.
“If in doubt, check with council, so you can proceed with certainty.”
