A HALLAM apprentice has been left with burns to the lower part of his body after an alleged prank went wrong last week.
WorkSafe is investigating the incident which occurred last Wednesday week at an automotive repair business.
WorkSafe spokesman Michael Birt said the 17-year-old had solvent on his clothes when it ignited and burnt his legs.
“We are investigating the allegation at the moment and we are speaking with a number of employees at the work place,” Mr Birt said.
He said young people just starting out in the work force were vulnerable to an array of possible injuries in the workplace.
“There is no place for these initiations or pranks because while they are often intended to be just a bit of fun or skylarking, the consequences can be very serious if not fatal.
“In a broader sense this sort of behaviour, where people pick on their workmates in a way that can cause injury, is a very serious matter and can not be tolerated in any workplace.
“Young people are the most vulnerable because of their inexperience and lack of skill and knowledge of the dangers.
“They can be particularly vulnerable to being on the receiving end of this sort of behaviour,” Mr Birt said.
Mr Birt said employers had a responsibility to make sure people are safe in the workplace.
He said any employee who had concerns about being injured at work should raise it with their boss or contact WorkSafe.
“The person should be report it initially to their supervisor or boss and they can also talk to their parents.
“If nothing is being done they can call WorkSafe.”
