NARRE Warren’s Turf One team failed to defend its first-innings total and went down to Berwick in an exciting round-seven clash for outright second spot on Saturday.
Narre won the toss and batted on a variable deck and started well with captain Wendell Perumal and vice-captain John Simpson.
Simpson was out in the 14th over when the score was 74 for 30.
Shean Vanderwert came in and put on 77 with his skipper before Perumal was out for 89 off 90 balls.
Narre Warren then fell into a bit of a slump and lost 5/29 with Vanderwert, Simpson, Jensen-Schmidt and Scott all falling in this period.
Chris Jarrett and Dave Wheeler rescued the innings, putting on close to 40 and posting a decent total of 216.
Berwick loaded up its top order with the big guns and it was up to Narre’s bowlers to prove a point. With Wheeler picking up Evans when the score was 26, it brought the two most prolific runs scorers in the competition to the crease together.
Good shot selection with some inconsistent bowling, Berwick hauled down Narre’s total with 15 balls to spare and plenty of wickets in the shed.
