MP welcomes newspaper apology

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

SOUTH Eastern Metropolitan MP Inga Peulich has received an apology from The Australian and a Liberal Party member who accused her of racial bullying last year.
Ms Peulich launched defamation action against the newspaper and the member Prasad Philip last year over the accusations aired in a story on 16 July 2015.
The Australian published a correction on 23 June 2016 that “Mr Philip now accepts Ms Peulich did not make any racist remarks to Mr Philip or racially bully him”.
“Mr Philip and The Australian apologise to Ms Peulich.”
Ms Peulich described the allegations as “unfounded” and welcomed the apology.
“As a person who migrated to Australia from Bosnia and Herzegovina as a child, as an MP and now Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs in the Victorian Parliament, such allegations are serious and the effect of this smear on my family has been both hurtful and distressing,” Ms Peulich said.
“The allegations have taken a toll on my family, my elderly mother in particular.”
Ms Peulich thanked her friends, supporters and multicultural communities for their support and encouragement.
“It is a period of my life that I am glad to put behind me.”
