Handouts for pet projects

By Callan Date
CASEY councillors have divided up more than $100,000 to various pet projects around town.
Councillors approved their own wish lists at Tuesday night’s council meeting with an array of community organisations set to benefit from the money.
The funds were surplus from the city’s 2006-2007 budget. Each of the city’s 11 councillors was allocated $10,000.
Endeavour Hills United Soccer Club received all of Cr Rob Wilson’s money for an extension to its Reema Reserve Pavilion.
Crs Brian Hetherton and Mick Morland pooled their allocation together to help fund the construction of the Berwick Streetscape project on High Street.
The south of Casey didn’t miss out with deputy mayor Colin Butler using the $10,000 to help build a footpath in Blind Bight.
Cranbourne Rotary Club, Cranbourne Cricket and Football clubs and Cranbourne Information and Support Services shared in Cr Kevin Bradford’s allocation.
“This $110,000 is going to benefit a vast majority of people because this money is spread right across the community,” Cr Bradford said.
Cr Michael Farley gave just under $2000 to the Oakgrove Community Centre.
Cr Farley also allocated $4000 to Yooralla Pre School in Narre Warren for the establishment of a pirate playground area.
Cr Farley said he felt like Father Christmas during his allocation spree.
“It’s great to be able to give out to organisations that need help,” he said.
Other big winners from the funds giveaway were the Hampton Park Netball Club, Merinda Park Community Centre, Old Cheese Factory in Berwick and Endeavour Sporting Club.
