New twist to old dance

By Cam Lucadou-wells

MAYIBUYE Performance Troupe is a free dance group with a twist.
Run by Melbourne non-profit group Cultural Infusion, the Narre Warren South weekly workshop helps about a dozen performers develop their life skills, as well as their dance talents.
The group name derives from an African term meaning ‘bringing back what is lost’. Troupes are based throughout Melbourne, South Africa, India and Egypt.
Global youth programs manager Jess Kitchen said dance was “the one thing” that could engage some young people.
During the fun, relaxed classes, the performers also sit down and talk about teamwork, peace-building, acceptance, self-expression as well as create items for mid-year and end-of-year concerts, Ms Kitchen said.
She said the program targeted the many young people who couldn’t access dance classes because of geography or cost.
“A lot of other dance workshops are quite strict and require a lot of commitment. They can really flog you.”
Program manager Amber Hae Hae, who graduated from the same program, said it gave her the chance to “build myself up” as a young person and performer.
“I have been given the privilege at only 20 years old to undertake the role of program manager here in Australia to help keep our programs running and work with many other youths to give them the best possible opportunities in life.”
The workshops are held at Oakgrove Community Centre, Oak Grove, Narre Warren South, after school on Thursdays. Details: 9412 6666.
