Heads down for clean up

LOCAL scouts, guides, residents and even a Federal MP were among the hundreds of people taking part in Clean Up Australia Day activities in Casey on Sunday.
More than 35 bags of rubbish were collected around the Narre Warren South area by the 20 local community members who did their bit for the environment.
Narre Warren Friends of River Gum Creek Reserve coordinator Phil Hughes said the day was a success.
“It was a tremendous effort that was put in by everyone, especially as the day was a warm one,” he said. Holt MP Anthony Byrne put on the gloves and got to work at two events.
Mr Byrne attended the Friends of Frog Hollow clean up in Endeavour Hills and the Narre Warren South Guides event at Berwick Springs lake.
“The Friends of Frog Hollow and the Narre Warren Girl Guides collected large amounts of rubbish from both locations and it was wonderful to be able to provide some assistance,” he said.
“It’s great to see so many groups, individuals, schools and businesses rallying behind the 2008 Clean Up Australia Day campaign. “I think every person in Holt understands the ongoing concern with the health of the environment and the need for action to keep our parks, reserves and waterways clean,” he said. Several local schools, including Eumemmerring College and Fountain Gate Primary School, also did their bit by cleaning up local areas.
More than 7200 tonnes of rubbish was collected this year by more than 800,000 volunteers at 6000 sites across Australia.
