Drive forges strong ties

A COIN drive at Kambrya College, Berwick, last Friday has helped the school to forge stronger ties with its sister school in Laos.
Year nine teacher Cathie Staunton said more than $800 was raised to help build a toilet block for the school.
“We had 115 metres in coins on Friday and there was $160 worth of five cent pieces,” she said.
Ms Staunton said the sister school relationship was forged after she visited Laos in September.
“Some of my friends are working there and I went over,” she said.
“My interest in the country led to the coin drive.
“Not many people know about Laos, which is a country that has struggled for a long time, and is really at a crossroads.”
Ms Staunton said the Australian Embassy in Laos had agreed to contribute funds to the toilet block project, which will cost $2000.
She said Kambrya College was keen to promote global education and build links with schools in other countries.
“We try to create an international community and encourage our students to be active global citizens,” she said.
