CFA warns of extreme risks

SCORCHING March temperatures have caused CFA commanders to issue a warning to Casey residents about the continued fire danger.
Fire restrictions were this week lifted in the municipalities of Casey, Dandenong and Cardinia but CFA official Trevor Owen said recent hot weather had contributed to an extreme fire risk.
The Western Port area operations manager said people still needed to be cautious.
“Although it is later in the season and cooler conditions have been experienced, there is still strong potential for fires,” Mr Owen said.
“The fire season is not over. It is important that we remain vigilant and remember that traditionally March is a very warm month.”
He said residents should check with their local council for any local bylaws in relation to burning off on private land.
“Just because fire restrictions may have been lifted doesn’t mean that it is safe to burn off on private land.
“People need to be aware of forecast weather conditions, assess the risk and check with the CFA and their local shire before conducting any burn offs.”
Mr Owen said the community played a pivotal role on high fire danger days.
“If people commit to heeding burn off advice, report any suspicious behaviour to police and are extremely careful with machinery, it goes a long way to helping CFA prevent fires,” he said.
