Hey brother, can you spare a dime!

LOCAL motorists will do well to have a few loose coins in their car when they are out and about this weekend.
That’s because local community organisation Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Casey will be collecting donations from various intersections in the area.
BBBS Casey is based at the Casey ARC and works in partnership with the YMCA to deliver mentoring services to young people who have limited adult support.
Program director Rebecca Wolstenholme said the youngsters who are mentored often have challenges at home and school and benefit from the support they receive from a mentor.
“Average waiting times for young people to be matched to a volunteer mentor are increasing,” Ms Wolstenholme said.
Demand for mentoring services is increasing with more than 80 young people currently waiting to be matched, she said.
“Funds received from intersection collections will go directly to the delivery of mentoring services to young people. All collectors are volunteers who are donating their time across the two collection days,” she said.
This weekend’s intersection collection brings to an end a month of fundraising events that have been organised by the YMCA to support the BBBS program.
Casey ARC organised a two week lap-a-thon which raised more than $400.
Jamie Hampson, 7, was the winner of the event. He raised more than $160 and was rewarded for his efforts with a certificate and prize.
“Every little bit helps,” Ms Wolstenholme said.
“It is great to have a community of supporters from the very young right up to the older, more mature members of our local community. Everyone can play a part.”
