Unsafe station

HALLAM train station has been ranked at number 21 in a recent report detailing unsafe stations which need urgent attention.
The report, which was conducted by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) revealed that patronage at Hallam had gone up 96.7 per cent since 2000.
More than 50 unmanned stations across the network were ranked according to validation records.
RTBU state secretary Trevor Dobbyn said the station needed to have a staff presence so it would be safer for commuters and train drivers.
“There has been a huge patronage increase at the station and as a consequence there is more trouble about,” Mr Dobbyn said.
“Our position is that the station should be staffed from the first train in the morning to the last train at night.” Neighbouring train stations Berwick, Narre Warren and Dandenong are all premium stations and are staffed from first to last train seven days a week.
“If you have problems with ticketing or want advice on how to get around the network it is just not there,” he said.
