Berwick’s ‘Hoddle grid’ protected

Casey Council has moved to protect the character of the ‘Hoddle grid’ residential area near Berwick Village.
The area – bounded by Princes Highway, Brisbane Street and Cardinia Street – would be protected under a proposed amendment to the Casey Planning Scheme.
It would be zoned as ‘Neighbourhood Residential Zone’ – which sets a two-storey and nine-metre height limit on dwellings.
There is also a mandatory garden requirement for properties in the zone.
The changes are part of proposed Amendment C198, which is on public exhibition.
The amendment also allows higher density housing close to shopping centres, and for smaller subdivisions in parts of the Low Density Residential Zone.
Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said the significant changes were in line with the council’s Housing Strategy.
“(The strategy) sets the direction to ensure the municipality has more diverse, well-located housing for residents over the next 15 years and beyond.”
Cr Ablett said in the future, more options such as townhouses, units and apartments would be required near activity centres.
