Bob Blaker, who has been a Berwick Woodworker for several years is also a fine leather-worker and has made several saddles for Berwick Woodworkers rocking horses.
Since Mr Blaker will not accept payment for the saddles, Pat Mahoney made a rocking horse as a gift for Mr Blaker.
In turn, Mr Blaker, who has been receiving treatment for cancer, decided he would like to donate the horse to the Box Hill Cricket Club, to be used as a fund raiser for their Jane McGrath Day.
This is a day when all the cricket club members wear pink hats and play with pink stumps. Funds raised on the day are for the Jane McGrath Foundation.
The horse was duly presented to the president of the Box Hill Cricket Club, Andrew Minta, at morning tea in the Berwick Woodworkers’ club-room at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick on Wednesday, 9 September.
Over the years the Berwick Woodworkers Club has donated thousands of well-crafted toys to several of the local welfare groups. The toys are given away in late November each year in order that the different organisations can get them sorted and ready for their Christmas needs.
At present the Berwick Woodworkers Club are well on their way to completing around eight or nine hundred toys which will be given away on the last weekend in November.
The club’s interest is in all kinds of fine woodwork and is open each morning Monday to Friday and Wednesday evening throughout the year.
