Rallying against hunger

Transit Soup Kitchen in Narre Warren is offering food support to people in need within the broader Narre Warren community.

“Every week we open our doors to people from broken homes, abusive relationships or marginalised members of the community because we see there is a need,” volunteer Dot O’Neil said.

The team of more than 100 offers people a three course meal on Monday evening and Wednesday lunch time every week.

They also have a food support system that provides grocery support for members of the community who are struggling to get by.

It is open every Thursday between 1:30 and 4:30pm, to provide basic necessities like meat, bread, yoghurt, fruits and vegetables.

“While we do go by recommendations from local agencies and have a screening process to be honest we haven’t turned anyone away yet,” Ms O’Neil said.

The group is currently helping about 500 people weekly and wants to help more.

“The message we want to send out there is that we want to help and are there for people in need.”
