Students present biology findings

Federation University’s Berwick Campus hosted a Biology Science Fair for students on Friday, 26 October.

Throughout the semester students have been researching the anatomy and physiology of vertebrates (humans and animals). The presentations included models of different biological systems (eyes, brains, hearts) and demonstrations showing how particular systems work, along with poster displays highlighting scientific information.

Students presented their findings during the fair for their final assessment task for Systems Biology.

Some examples of projects students are working on include:

• Comparative differences in the anatomy of the heart between mammals, fish, birds and reptiles

• Comparative differences in the digestive anatomy of ruminant (sheep/cows) and non-ruminant (humans) animals

• How smoking affects the function of the lung

• Brain lateralisation

• How our eyes process images

• How the immune system protects us from invading pathogens
