CASEY celebrated National Refugee Week with the theme of A Place to Call Home.
The celebration, which has been held every year since 1986, gives Casey families an opportunity to honour their backgrounds and meet other families with similar experiences.
City of Casey mayor Janet Halsall said by acknowledging Refugee Week, council hoped to encourage people to think about the global themes of protection and human rights by focusing on the fundamental right to a secure home.
The event was held at the South Eastern Migrant Resource and included guest speakers from Africa and Afghanistan, children’s entertainment and activities and a multicultural lunch.
“The aim of this event was to further build on a culture of welcome throughout Casey,” she said.
As part of the celebrations, a bus tour around Casey was held for the Sudanese community.
“The City of Casey prides itself on being such a vibrant and diverse community, and by welcoming refugees into our community, we are demonstrating compassion and enhancing our cultural diversity,” Cr Halsall said.
