Picture: Tahir Harun.LOCAL footballs finest were honoured on Saturday night with the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) announcing their Team of the Century.
Selectors had the tough job of sifting through more than 200 nominations, which were originally picked from about 27,000 footballers, and finalising a team of 27 players.
About 400 people packed into the Frankston Arts Centre for the gala event and were treated to a night of legendary tales from football folklore.
Chelsea legend Kevin ‘Doc’ White was bestowed with the honour of captain of the team that also featured players of the calibre of Simon Goosey, Richard Everist, Graham Alderson and Brendon Moore.
Graham ‘Josh’ Kendall, who steered Frankston YCW to four flags in the 90s, was selected as coach of the team.
Darryl Nisbet was named as assistant coach of the team.
The side contained a mixture of players from different eras and the competitions that formed the basis of the MPNFL – Peninsula Football Association (1908-1933), Peninsula District Football Association (1920-1933), Nepean Football League (1959-1986) and South West Gippsland Football League (1954-1994) – as well as the current MPNFL (1987-today).
There were five former SWGFL players/coaches selected in the final group with Nisbet and Kendall, who started his career with Cranbourne, joined by Graham Henwood (Doveton/Berwick), Pat Garrett and Steve Dalgleish (both Cranbourne).
Umpires Jeff Jones and Peter Barber also made the team as the men in white.
