EUMEMMERRING Secondary College is short-listed for the 2008 Victorian Training Awards.
The school’s Hallam campus is a finalist, along with two other schools, in the Victorian Vocational and Education Training in Schools Excellence Award category.
The nomination is for the school’s sport and recreation and community recreation program.
The award recognises the best vocational and education training program in Victoria’s schools.
Seven hundred students are enrolled in Eumemmerring’s many VET courses, which include automotive, dance, electro-technology, building and construction, community services, multi-media music industry, information technology, hospitality, hairdressing, and retail operations.
The college provides elite training by professional sports men and women and, in turn, provides training for local primary school children.
Students can opt for Australian rules football, rugby league, basketball, netball, cricket, or soccer, among other sports.
The program helps students with their career choices in the sports industry.
“It’s a very successful program” Hallam campus principal Pam Dyson said. “It helps increase students’ confidence and self esteem and helps them choose their career path.”
