Students get job-ready

Students from Fountain Gate Secondary College recently ventured to the Docklands to get a taste of the workforce life and build their learning skills.

Nineteen Year 7 and Year 8 students visited Tata Consultancy Services where they tackled various problem solving tasks including designing a parachute model on 1 August.

They participated in five sessions using a scientific method approach to problem solving where they stated a hypothesis, tested their ideas, evaluated and then redesigned.

The excursion was part of the school’s STEM-based Innovate Program (science, technology, engineering, and maths), an initiative of the Australian Business and Community Network.

During their second session on 16 August, students were challenged to think about ‘Creators vs Consumers’ and debate the use of technology at school.

School principal Pete Hanratty said the College was thrilled to participate in the program as students were able to build their confidence and knowledge of STEM careers.
